15. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION: (Give reasons why this particular project is considered worthwhile.) |
Invasive pests and diseases threaten forest health and productivity worldwide (Wingfield et al. 2015) with developing countries the most vulnerable to their impacts and having the Lowest capacity to manage outbreaks (e.g. Paini et al. 2016). Increased trade, global movement and a changing climate increase the threat of emerging pests and diseases (Hurley et al. 2017). The capability to detect and respond to forest pest and disease incursions is crucial to minimizing their impacts. In SE Asia, this capacity varies widely among countries, but there is a general lack of preparedness to respond to invasive pests and diseases. A coordinated, strengthened forest bio-security capacity in SE Asia is therefore critical to the future of the region’s forests |
16. BENEFITS (Who will benefit, directly and indirectly, from the project?) |
The key impact of the project will be the establishment of a sustainable forest health and bio-security network for SE Asia. The network will assist in safeguarding planted and native forests from potential pest and disease threats by enhancing bio-security preparedness and response capability to ultimately benefit industry, government and rural communities by improving productivity and security of forests. Outcomes include:
• Threat of key exotic and endemic insect pests and pathogens reduced by research and training in surveillance and reporting, risk assessment and diagnostics for researchers, forestry officers and industry and smallholder growers.
• Risk of establishment and spread of exotic and native pests and diseases is reduced through implementation of FHS and HRSS methodologies in partner countries.
• Entry pathways, risk of spread and potential impact on production and native forests of potential pest and disease threats to SE Asia and Australia identified and reviewed.
• Enhanced stakeholder awareness of forest biosecurity and pest and disease management options.
• Increased awareness of biosecurity preparedness amongst plant protection and quarantine agencies.
• Increased adoption of monitoring and surveillance activities by stakeholders.
• Enhanced coordination of bio-security protocols and practices between regional and national departments (in-country) and between national agencies (between-country) |

Establishment of an effective and sustainable forest bio-security network for the region is the primary outcome of the project. If this is successfully achieved the project's emphasis on promoting equal roles in the network for women will mean that there is a strong likelihood that these roles for women will be sustained across the network after the completion of this research. Capacity strengthening is an important focus of this project and the improved skills and capacities of women developed during the project will continue to be applied following project completion. |

The project has been started early 2022 as result below
- Discussion on separate tasks between FA and GDA about field work and lap.
- To cooperate with partners the protocols development in relation with project tasks
- To develop mapping with Acacia sSp, Eucalyptus sSp and Pine sSp for field work. |
