Cambodia is one of the developing countries in South-East Asia. Ever since the civil war ended, a large portion of the Cambodian population lives in rural areas and strongly relies on agriculture for livelihood. Even today, agriculture remains as one of the most robust sectors in Cambodia’s economy, despite there are other rising sectors, such as garments, tourism and construction.
In order to fully maximize agriculture’s contribution to a country’s GDP, they must have an increase in agricultural productions as well as high productivity rate. However, Cambodian farmers are constraint in their capability to maximize output. They are facing some limitations, such as (1) Production capacity; (2) Capacity building; (3) Coordination issues; and (4) Business-enabling environment.
There are other issues that contribute to Cambodia’s nominal productivity rate. One issue is the high migration rate to urban areas. This causes a considerable shortage of farm labor and low productivity in rural areas while creating even a bigger problem in the urban areas: overpopulation. Another issue is that most of the underprivileged Cambodian population, especially the farmers, have very limited education, knowledge, skills and creativity; therefore, they are reluctant or unwilling to conduct any kinds of business or profession.
Cooperative spirit is one of the ways to help them get rid of poverty and enable them to be united while reducing their need to migrate to the urban areas as well as teaching them to become more adept in managing their business. |
