Expand public piped water supply with better capacity and coverage to the citizens and tourists in Siem Reap province |
14. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: (Provide a description of the project and all its components.) |
- Package 1: Construction of drainage system and water pump station, two lines of main pipe for water pump with diameter of 700 mm and the main pipe for water supply with diameter from 600 mm to 1,100 mm.
- Package 2: Installment of water supply distribution pipes in Siem Reap with diameter from 110 mm to 500 mm
- Package 3: The construction of water treatment station of capacity 60,000 m3/day and supply and installation of electrical and mechanical at pumping station |
15. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION: (Give reasons why this particular project is considered worthwhile.) |
Siem Reap is the largest tourism center in Cambodia absorbing local and international tourists around 5 million per annum. However, the proportion of current water supply services of Siem Reap Public Water Supply Authority is around 40% of the total water demand. Thus, the project has been counted as the most prioritized project in order to realize the Royal Government of Cambodia's vision over the urban water supply targeting 100% by 2025. |
16. BENEFITS (Who will benefit, directly and indirectly, from the project?) |
The project will connect around 154,000 people and tourists as well as other economic activity to clean water supply in Siem Reap. |

The main source of water will be from the Great Sap Lake and there will be construction of water treatment station, drainage for water flow and the digging for pipe installation. These construction has affected to submerged forest and farm-land of the people. However, Ministry of Environment has conducted the Environmental Risk Assessment and granted permission to the project.
This project is deemed to help reduce poverty incidence for the people because the water supply will enhance health quality and cut down the expense for disease treatment due to the use of unclean water. In addition, ,it also reduces the dependency on underground water which could affect the balance of underground water and secure the foundation of ancient temples from erosion. |

The project will help women in general who are in charge of collecting water daily in the family. Likewise, kids will be in good health, reducing the amount of time and money for kids-care. Currently, the women employee in the Siem Reap Public Water Supply Authority are taking part to implement the project. |

Siem Reap Public Water Supply Authority has both expertise and experience to implement the project successfully with the guidance from MEF and MISTI

23. STATUS OF PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION: (Provide a brief update on the progress of the project to date. Discuss any major problems causing delays in project implementation.) |
Project Progress:
- Package 1: (Intake, raw water pipe and main distribution pipes): Already selected contractor and started construction from January 2020. The construction completed about 85.1% as of January 2022.
- Package 2 (Distribution Pipes): The construction was started from April 2019. The construction was completed about 87.4% as of January 2022.
- Package 3 (Water Treatment Plant): Already selected contractor and started construction from March 2020. The construction was completed about 71.3% as of January 2022.
